The Concept Of Evidence Based Practice Social Work Essay Essay Example
The Concept Of Evidence Based Practice Social Work Essay Essay Example The Concept Of Evidence Based Practice Social Work Essay Paper The Concept Of Evidence Based Practice Social Work Essay Paper Introduction This essay aims to place and critically appraise grounds of whether social intercession better result for depression in British Pakistani adult females. I will analyze whether social intercession can take to better mental well-being, authorization and single growing. I will analyze the value accent of curative societal support in mental wellness. The context of societal work pattern in mental wellness is complex, hence societal work intercession has to hold an ethical and value based model. I will measure the theoretical footing for standardise pattern. The statutory alterations in Britain to see the fundamental values place incorporated in recent policies and statute law will be examined. Specify the construct of grounds based pattern Evidence based pattern ( EBP ) harmonizing to Sackett ( 1997 ) citied in Gray et Al ( 2009: 119 ) connotes a procedure of bettering professional opinion through the painstaking and wise integrating and synthesis of well-researched empirical grounds to measure the efficaciousness and effectivity of intercession in heightening service users results and how this can be integrated into pattern context to better service bringing and professional answerability ( Department of Health Service and Public Safety, 2012 ) ( Gray, Plath, A ; Webb, 2009 ) ( Sheppard, 2004 ) ( Corby, 2006 ) . It gives a model for analyzing the state of affairs and bring forthing a figure of possible options ( Thompson N. , 2000, p. 35 ) . ( Mathews A ; Crawford, 2011 ) suggested that practicians must believe critically and reflect on research grounds for credibleness, completeness and transferability to inform professional opinion as this an deduction for policy shapers, professionals, communities and servic e users. The drift for EBP within societal work is underpinned on the centrality on service users best involvement to steer pattern that is culturally sensitive and of significance to service users within the dynamic context of pattern, statute law and societal policy ( Bolton, 2002 ) . EBP hence necessitates societal workers reflexiveness of how values, theoretical premises , policies, past experiences and the context in which pattern takes topographic point combine with service users perspective, penchants, and civilization to steer and inform pattern ( Munro, 2002:10 ) . This is to account for the many-sided personal, cultural and societal dimensions of service users ( Webber A ; Nathan, 2010 ) Select an facet of societal work What involvement me in this subject is the spread which exist in supplying culturally sensitive support to black and cultural minority group with depression. The grounds available suggest that single with mental wellness hurt including depression are the most marginalised and excluded groups in society ( Stepney A ; Ford, 2001 ) . Additionally, the prevalence of depression in black and minority ethnic ( BME ) and in peculiar adult females from Pakistani background in Britain, underlines the importance of back uping statutory and voluntary enterprises directed towards run intoing their demands ( Husain, Creed, A ; Tomenson, 1997 ) ( Gater, et al. , 2009 ) . ( Miranda, et al. , 2003 ) noted the spread in grounds based for social intercession . Pulling on their pattern experiences and appropriate grounds Within the context of community voluntary mental wellness services, their diverse types of grounds that informs pattern and policy and societal workers have an ethical duty in the pick of theories and theoretical account of working. In my pattern, a systems attack is emphasised in understanding the interplay and multiplicity of service users context. Psychodynamic attack is concerned with how perceptual experiences of demands, stigma and stereotyped premises motivate human behavior including aid seeking, revelation of sensitive information. Past experiences are seen as cardinal in the jobs single experience and used in understanding the kineticss of the assisting relationship. Social larning theory suggests behaviors are influenced by service users socio-cultural context. For illustration aid seeking behavior is influenced and reinforced by stigma and service bringing Therefore cognitive- behavioral therapy is emphasised by understanding the function perceptual experiences in aid seeking. Therefore through interaction, patterning service users perceptual experience is influenced. Conflict theory is priceless in understanding cultural struggles, stigma and subjugation, power instability. As noted in Saleeby ( 1996 ) the strength position is intrinsic to societal work values of service users engagement, and esteeming single as holding strengths The feminist position takes into history the function of gender and the historical deficiency of power experienced by adult females. Collaborative relationship is emphasised between the societal worker and service user through equality and authorization. Through empirical observation utilizing randomised controlled test, Gater, et Al ( 2010 ) investigated the effectual of Social intercession for British Pakistani adult females with depression. It sought to explicate the cause and consequence , to foretell and command world, and to make unambiguous nonsubjective truth that can be proven or disproved to inform the effectivity of intercession and policies execution. Qualitative informations used to understand persons societal world within their socio- cultural context which inquiries cultural premises, favoritism and subjugation and the deduction and significance in execution. This can be used to gestate service users position sing intercession and constabularies deductions, their demands and perceptual experiences about current constabularies and intercessions. The job work outing theoretical account focal points on understanding service users in their context and working in partnership. In a cross sectional survey, prevalence of depression amongst adult females of Pakistani beginning was twice every bit high comparison to white European adult females ( Gater, et al. , 2009 ) . ( Campbell A ; McLean, 2002 ) suggested that societal capital resources is embedded in within societal webs and better recovery. An alternate explanatory model for the prevalence of depression in Pakistani adult females in mental wellness statistics has been the societal constructive position. This position encompasses aid seeking behavior. There are some evidenced based intercessions that have been proven to assist people recovery from depression. The randomised control test survey by ( Harris, Brown, A ; Robinson, Befriending as an intercession for chronic depression among adult females in an interior metropolis: Randomised control trail, 1999 ) found that befriending strategies are good in bettering recovery. This is to counter the unfavorable judgments of institutional racism and cultural premises in the bringing of mental wellness services to black and cultural minority groups ( Gould, 2010 ) . Phillip Rack ( 1982 ) cited in ( Gould, 2010 ) : 40 proposed a Culturally attuned attack that used penetration This intercession is cardinal to societal work values of respecting and valuing uniqueness and diverseness and recognising and edifice strengths. Social intercession involves facets of partnership and include and accent on the impact of environmental force per unit areas on persons and therefore can be priceless in anti-discriminatory work with service users in offering authorization and covering with structural subjugation ( Ahmad B. , 1990, p. 51 ) . He besides noted the importance of importance of qualitative research in researching these issues ( Ahmad W. , 1995 ) . This societal intercession included specific mark groups. It uses an attack that included instruction and/or direct contact with people who are depressed. Social intercession provides societal workers with a structural grasp of the nature of societal jobs ( Gould, 2010, p. 60 ) ( Harris, 2010 ) societal support and depression Reconnection of hope through curative brush Psychosocial and cognitive therapies have now been included in clinical pattern guidelines. However, there remain considerable jobs with black and cultural minority accessing these services. Research has shown a consistent relationship between mental unwellness and indexs of societal disadvantages ( Fryers, Melzer, A ; Jenkins, 2003 ) . Therefore, development of schemes to back up aid seeking and intervention is needed. ( Mathews A ; Crawford, 2011 ) ( Orme A ; Shemmings, 2010 ) ( Smith, 2004 ) ( Gask, Aseem, Waquas, A ; Waheed, 2011 ) qualitative thematic analysis ( societal isolation ) household struggle, societal cultural factors, psychosocial factors Identify what can be learned from the grounds In Gater, et Al ( 2010 ) Social intercession for British Pakistani adult females with depression: randomised controlled test, Participants societal operation and depression were signiià ¬?cantly improved. Given the prevalence of depression ( Gater, et al. , 2009 ) in this group and the under-representation amongst people able to entree supportive services, this presents an of import development. In relation to bettering participants battle qualitative surveies have found the enfeebling consequence of stigma as a signiià ¬?cant barrier for accessing support ( Livingston A ; Boyd, 2010 ) ( Mak, Poon, Pun, A ; Cheung, 2007 ) . Stigma is understood as the interplay of persons societal individuality and socio-cultural kineticss in which persons with mental wellness are discriminated against and socially excluded due to stereotyped premise ( Lam, 2008 ) . This ià ¬?nding is consistent with the grounds sing societal support intercessions in ( Harris, A stress-vunerability theoretical account of mental wellness upset: deductions for pattern, 2010 ) . However, there is a spread of how stigma associated with mental unwellness can be reduced. The survey was of high research quality, which indicates a decreased hazard of biasness and confounding. A major restriction of this survey is heterogeneity amongst the sample, that merely 123 participants and increase in societal operation is limited to merely 3 months. Therefore, the medium to long-run effects of societal intercession within this group remain mostly unknown. Another research spread is the absence of a dynamic medicine attachment related surveies aimed at this group, which have been identiià ¬?ed as of import for accomplishing attachment and better result for depression ( Miranda, et al. , 2003 ) . Addressing the opposition from household members around issue of confidentiality and stigma amongst this population may be best accomplished through culturally appropriate communicating schemes that installations warm and empathy and societal capital. In contrast, the research suggests that societal intercession although it improves depression in the short tally will non accomplish meaningful betterments in the long tally without antidepressant. ( Department of Health, 2007 ) emphasises partnership working, regard for diverseness, strengths and aspirations and service users centred. Its focal point on effectivity, answerability and personal development are congruent with the rules of grounds based pattern. ( Slade, 2009 ) noted that personal recovery is a challenging and contested construct within the sphere of empirical grounds. The multi facet degree of mental unwellness is apparent in the definition of mental wellness, the impact of intervention and the societal effects. However, ( Resnick, Fontana, Lehman, A ; RA, 2005 ) highlighted that authorization, hope and optimism, cognition and life satisfaction result that are cardinal to the recovery theoretical account allows the prevalence of recovery to be investigated through empirical observation. ( Gould, 2010 ) As stated in ( Gater, et al. , 2009 ) , an epidemiology of depression that accounts for societal support and societal troubles is critical. Social context of depression However, depression is associated with of import negative effects, such as societal exclusion, low self-pride. Social exclusion harmonizing to ( Hills, LeGrand, A ; Piachaud, 2004 ) should be conceptualise in the context of the personal, cultural and structural dimension and highlighted deficiency of societal interaction as a signifier of societal exclusion. Attuned to cultural beliefs and norms Social and inclusive pattern have been developed and reinforced by the Capabilities for Inclusive Practice ( Department of Health, 2007 ) study: working in partnership, esteeming diverseness. Assessment requires service users engagement and entree to information to do informed pick. This theoretical account of appraisal has to be cultural sensitive and proactive in nature. Psychosocial appraisal Although societal support is often referred to as good in relation to depression, there has been small effort to stipulate what this means and to measure the effectivity of intercessions to cut down isolation. ( Tew, 2004 ) Partnership working is important in following a societal theoretical account of intercession. Culturally sensitive pattern. ( Gater, Waheed, Husain, Tomenson, Aseem, A ; Creed, 2010 ) ( Webber W. , 2011 ) Research indicates that ( Oakley, Strange, Toroyan, Wiggins, Roberts, A ; Stephenson, 2003 ) Mental wellness is pattern within a context of multi-disciplinary coaction to incorporate the bio-psychosocial theoretical account of pattern. The execution of EBP within this context has to account for the theoretical premises that underpin this country of pattern. This involves preparation and supervising. Research by ( Huxley, et al. , 2005 ) indicated emphasis of workers as accounting for their deficiency of implementing EBP. noted that another ground for EBP non been implemented is due to stereotyped premises that black and cultural minorities prefer informal support than support from professional. One barrier to effectual appraisal and intercession for depression epidemiology Another barrier is the reluctance of cultural minority group to portion their emotional symptoms due to household force per unit area and perceive stigma. To get the better of these barriers, -social intercession that accounts for societal capital is important. EBP therefore requires pattern that is needs non resources leads if services are to be provided that are of sound professional opinion. Percepts about depression and stigma have been through empirical observation supported in experimental, cross-sectional and longitudinal surveies to decline depression and affect interpersonal result and societal support ( Thomsen, 2006 ) . Analysis and brooding procedure of informations aggregation, the transparences about the relational nature of the research, and the ways which service users perspective are constructed through a respectful partnership and reflexiveness of how our values, theoretical premises, policies, past experiences and the context in which pattern takes topographic point. Trust and openness in research relationship a mutual procedure right- based analytical attack ( Department of Health, 2008 ) ethical and critical engage that with respectful uncertainnesss that reflect on the procedure of battle and analysis Common and sincere coaction, over clip respectful uncertainnesss Using multiple informations beginnings to account for publication biasness and multiple positions and ways of cognizing Recognition of complexnesss of worlds Use of reflexiveness focal point on contexts of and relationships between research worker and researched as determining the creative activity of cognition. Ethical consideration in cognition ( Gask, Aseem, Waquas, A ; Waheed, 2011 ) understanding how symptoms are expressed and perceive. Understanding emotional expressiveness within cultural context. Decision In decision, societal intercession has highlighted schemes that have demonstrated some success for bettering aid seeking. Given the complexnesss and multi facet dimension of single experiences and the context in which needs occurs, it is imperative that the singularity of person is taken into history within the paradigm of culturally competent pattern ( Dalrymple and Burke, 2006 ) . In add-on, Social Work pattern draws on theoretical cognition from societal scientific disciplines, which are normally Eurocentric, it is indispensable, that Social Work pattern integrate cognition from best grounds for it to run into it ethical duty to counter oppressive and prejudiced pattern ( Thompson N. , 2003 ) ( Webber W. , 2011 ) . Traits of a successful Byzantine emperor from the perspective of Research Paper
Traits of a successful Byzantine emperor from the perspective of Michael Psellus - Research Paper Example In his historical works, he describes the attributes of the various emperors (it is notable that he had shifted his political alignment numerous times during his lifetime, thus implying that he had assessed Emperors and shifted allegiances when he perceived that an Emperor was weak). Thus, one can make the argument that Psellus was a pragmatists and a proto-Machiavellian figure, as evidenced by his political career, and the standards by which he assessed politicians and emperors. From reading Psellusââ¬â¢ Chronographia, one can arrive to the conclusion that Psellusââ¬â¢ ideas on what constituted a successful emperor were derived from the earlier Byzantine history (since the notorious ââ¬Å"dirty power politicsâ⬠that one can observe throughout the late Byzantine history can be traced to the earlier Roman times). Therefore, the traits that would make one a good Byzantine emperor were theorized by Psellus at a time when the Byzantine Empire was enjoying a century of success , stability and expansion (while also going through difficult times later on). Thus, Psellus himself was a high-class Byzantine political figure who was actively involved with the court politics of the Byzantine Emperors . Since Psellus had specialized in court politics, his perspective is inseparable from the Constantinopolitan political culture. Various political events that took place in Psellusââ¬â¢ time and the reigns of various emperors that greatly differed from each other provided Psellus with a wide-range of political experience to derive his assessment model from, since he always had the opportunity to observe how the imperial court had functioned under different emperors. Michael Psellus Traits of a Successful Byzantine Emperor In his book, the Fourteen Byzantine Rulers, Psellus provides a first-hand account that includes observations of blatant mismanagement, unethical political practices, incompetence, as well as successful or exemplary incidents that he attributes t o various Byzantine emperors and politicians. Since Psellus was a member of the Byzantine court for nearly a quarter century, he was able to not only observe but also interact with various emperors. This enabled him to better comprehend the various traits and ruling-styles of different emperors and thus form connections between the traits of a particular emperor and how those traits related to economic growth, military success, or the general well-being of the Empire at different instances throughout his career3. It should be noted though, that Psellusââ¬â¢ views were undoubtedly influenced by the norms of his time. Thus, Psellusââ¬â¢ political assessments also have a historical touch to it, apart from only concerning the discipline of political science. From the first to the last of the fourteen emperors, Psellus provides the following traits as being necessary for Byzantine Emperor to be a successful ruler4. Alertness, thoughtfulness and Intelligence The notion that these se ries of traits are necessary for an emperor to be successful is evidenced by the after-math of the demise of John Tzimisces. The legible heirs to the throne were Basil and Constantine, and both of them had been gaining political power prior to the death of Tzimisces. Michael Psellus explains that the two heirs had different political

Ethics and Professional Code of Conduct Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Ethics and Professional Code of Conduct - Essay Example Integrity ensures that such persons respect the citizensââ¬â¢ constitutional rights, liberty and adhere to the values of justice and fairness in their duties to the citizens (Gaines & Kappeler, 2011, p 345). In this case, the professional is capable of ensuring fairness in his or her duties and refraining from unjust use of authority. Secondly, ethics and integrity ensures that police chief exercises reasonable courtesy while interacting with the public. In this case, the police chief or county sheriff is able to refrain from mocking, embarrassing, ridiculing or humiliating subordinates or fellow officers in order to incite them to violence. Thirdly, ethics and integrity will enable such professionals to observe confidentiality of information that is available to them in their capacity as senior law enforcement officers (Gaines & Kappeler , p 343). The officers should not willfully violate any legal restrictions that restrict the dissemination of the private information and should not disclose information that may endanger the life of a complaint or victim to a crime. There is a clear difference between ethics, morality and law as pertains to the duties of law enforcement officers. Ethics are external standards that are set by the law enforcement profession and are regarded as the social system or framework that should offer the acceptable behavior in the execution of duties of the law enforcement officer (Hess & Orthmann, 2011, p189). Morality refers to the law enforcement officerââ¬â¢s own principles regarding what is right or wrong. Morality is internal as it reflects the habits, beliefs, culture, and religion of an individual while ethics are external since they are set by the profession. Morality is guided by the existing cultural norms while the ethics are guided by the legal and professional guidelines. Dutelle (2011) asserts that the morals are

Describe Romeo and Juliets love Essay Example for Free
Describe Romeo and Juliets love Essay Describe Romeo and Juliets love and the way it develops in the course of the play. (Look carefully at the language used and use short quotations to illustrate your answer. ) Shakespeare meant for his plays to be performed on a stage and not to be read, he was a very skilled play write and he made his audiences believe things that in reality could not happen in such a short space of time. Romeo and Juliets love for one another shows their disobedience towards their parents. The houses that the pair of star crossd lovers belong to are involved in an ancient feud. We are made aware of the feud before we even meet the lovers; it is the very first thing that the Chorus, who is a single person on the stage which Shakespeare and many other play writes used to calm down a disorderly audience and give background information on the play, says: Two households both alike in dignity In fair Verona, where we lay our scene, From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. Their love is ill-fated from the moment they first meet, at Capulets party, because of the dispute that has been going on for generations. When we first meet Romeo, his father Lord Montague describes Romeos melancholic mood, this fits exactly the contemporary ideas of lovesickness in Shakespeares time. Lord Montague and Benvolio contrast Romeos feelings for Rosaline and how they have changed his personality. We can see that Romeo is not himself as he says: Tut, I have lost myself; I am not here; This is not Romeo, hes some other where. The many oxymorons, Romeo uses in his speech are meant to suggest his confused state of mind: Feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health, Still-waking sleep,Romeo sees Rosaline as the most beautiful woman on earth he matches her beauty to those of saints: When the devout religion of mine eye Maintains such falsehood, then turn tears to fire! It seems that Romeo is only in love with the idea of being in love. On our first meeting with Juliet her mother is calling her. She replies to her mother in a formal way: Madam, I am here. What is your will? She is modest, quiet and beautiful. Since she is from a powerful Verona family she is well dressed. When Lady Capulet suggests that the County Paris would make a good husband, Juliet responds:Ill look to like, if looking liking move. But no more deep will I endart mine eye Than your consent gives strength to make it fly. In the times when the play was written it was normal for parents to arrange who their daughter would marry. When Romeo sees Juliet for the first time his extravagant declarations of love for Rosaline vanish in a second. He now speaks with tenderness and plainness: Beauty to rich for use, for earth to dear! So shows a snowy dove trooping with crows, As yonder lady oer her fellows shows. In the last line of his speech, Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight! For I neer saw true beauty till this night. What Romeo says, is that what he said earlier in the play was silly and wrong. Ironically, when Benvolio was persuading Romeo to go to the party he told him he would soon forget Rosaline and this is just what happened. Romeo anticipates the line of approach he will take during the dance by saying that her touch will bless his hand. It was believed at this time that true love always struck at first sight; love that grew gradually was no love at all. This holy shrine, the gentle sin is this: My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand. This is a quick-witted bout of flirtation in which both sides are equally smitten, as is made clear by what follows, but in which Juliet plays the proper young girls role of cutting up Romeos lines as fast as he can think them up. Saints do not move, but grant for prayers sake. Then have my lips the sin that they have took. and You kiss by the book. This shows Juliet to be much wittier than a typical 13 year old girl. This flirtatious fourteen-line passage is actually a sonnet; it was popular in the sixteenth century and generally regarded as the proper means for love poetry. Juliet manages to tease Romeo slightly in the earnest gesture of the devotion that they declare: For saints have hands that pilgrims hands do touch, and Ay, pilgrim, lips that they use in prayer. Juliet is encouraging Romeo to kiss her in a subtle way. She takes early charge of the relationship. Romeos love for Juliet is unmistakably passionate, which an Elizabethan audience would have loved. He uses a lot of effective imagery. For example the image of the sun: It is the east, and Juliet the sun! Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, Romeo is putting Juliet on a higher pedestal, saying she is a higher being, he is also referring to the brightness of her beauty, and that she brings light into his world of darkness. In calling for the triumph of the sun over the moon, Romeo is hoping she will not remain a virgin much longer. Women who prolonged their virginity excessively were thought to suffer from green-sickness, a problem that could only be cured by healthy lovemaking. The entire opening soliloquy to this scene is devoted to Romeos fevered desire that Juliet will make love with him. Despite his passion, he is shy enough, and polite enough, not to simply burst in upon her. It is the tension between his overwhelming desire and his reserve that shows how much he truly loves her. The comparison of a womans eyes to bright stars was a usual thing, but Romeo elaborates it in a dazzling series of lines dwelling on the brightness of Juliets beauty: The brightness of her cheek would shame those stars As daylight doth a lamp. Her eyes in heaven Romeo is impetuous, impulsive and has his head in the clouds; he uses phrases of elaborate description. Whereas Juliet is down-to-earth, practical, natural and spontaneous by her speech we can tell that it is her first experience of love and that she is young and because of the language she uses that Romeo excites her. It is Juliet who is thinking through the consequences of their love more systematically and practically than is Romeo. She almost immediately speaks of the death that threatens him: And the place of death, considering who thou art, If any of my kinsmen find thee here Romeo replies that love cannot be held out by stony limits. Romeo believes that love has directed him to Juliet. From the beginning their dialogue is riddled with reference to death. This is dramatically ironic because the chorus already told the audience that they will die because of their love. When Romeo says: Alack, there lies more peril in thine eyes; And thou but love me, let them find me here He is using conventional and courtly language, which goes back centuries. Juliets long speech makes clear that she is still an honourable young woman who wishes her love had not been so promptly revealed; but now that it has been, she does not intend to look backward. She indirectly refers that Jove laughs at the oaths of lovers. Just as Romeo had scorned the moon for its virginity, Juliet rejects it as too variable: O swear not by the moon, th inconstant moon, That monthly changes in her circled orb, Lest that thy love prove likewise variable. Juliet is honest. She feels that she has been too easily won by Romeo: Or if thou thinkst I am too quickly won, Ill frown and be perverse and say thee nay, So thou wilt woo; but else, not for the world. Again Juliet allows herself to flirt with oath in calling Romeo her God. Romeo insists that he will love Juliet faithfully. Having proclaimed her love once, the basis of Juliets expression is unstopped, and she becomes the dominant figure in the rest of the scene. This young pair know very little about each other except that they are extremely attractive and witty. Juliets has split moods in this scene one is lead by her head and one by her heart. Her head is her practical side; her heart is spontaneous and excited. Falconry was a popular sport in Elizabethan England. Juliet is comparing Romeo to a falcon, and what she would like is for Romeo to be her falcon, she likes the idea of being able to call him back to her hand whenever she needs him: Hist! Romeo, hist! O for a falconers voice, To lure this tassel-gentle back again! When Romeo asked the Friar to marry Juliet and himself, the Friar agreed only because he is hoping that the marriage of Romeo and Juliet will put an end to feud between the houses of Montague and Capulet. From the text we can tell that Friar Laurence is Romeos confident, a father-figure. Children in the 14th/15th Centuries who had important parents didnt have the same relationship as children today have with their parents. This is why Juliet confides in her nurse and Romeo in Friar Laurence. The last line in Act two Scene one, Friar Laurence is saying to Romeo that he should take it slow because those that go to fast will stumble later on: Wisely and slow: they stumble that run fast. In the marriage scene it is Friar Laurence who is thinking ahead, he says: So smile the heavens upon this holy act, That after hours with sorrow chide us not! Romeo, lives only in the present, and says so: Amen, amen! But come what sorrow can, It cannot countervail the exchange of joy That one short minute gives me in her sight. In his view, the joy of a minute with Juliet will be greater than all the possible sorrow of any later hours. Romeo adds that he is ready to face the greatest sorrow of all: Do thou but close our hands with holy words, Then love-devouring death do what he dare; It is enough I may but call her mine. These exulting words foreshadow what actually happens; love-devouring death makes its first appearance shortly after the wedding. The Friar understands that Romeo thinks love will make him bullet-proof, and tries to talk some sense into him: These violent delights have violent ends And in their triumph die, like fire and powder, Which as they kiss consume. On their wedding night Friar Laurence anticipates that they will consume each other (consummate their marriage). Just like the nurse anticipates for Juliet. The Friar says that the ecstasies of love cant last forever. The sweetest honey Is loathsome in his own deliciousness, And in the taste confounds the appetite: In other words, too much honey can ruin its taste. The Friar concludes his little talk by advising Romeo to love moderately as, Too swift arrives as tardy as too slow. Juliet reveals her innermost feelings in her soliloquy. She is apprehensive and excited: she makes a reference to the classical god Phoebus Apollo: Gallop apace, you fiery-footed steeds, Towards Phoebus lodging; such a waggoner. Juliet uses a lot of phrases that make her seem impatient like, Gallop, leap and fiery-footed steeds. Juliet is nervous about what is going to happen when Romeo arrives. She extends the falcon image: Hood my unmannd blood, bating in my cheeks, With thy black mantle; till strange love, grown bold, She gives the impression that she is worried about her body and that she will not fulfil Romeos needs. The repetitive use of the word come refers to her impatience for Romeo to arrive quickly to her. Most of the soliloquy is of a sexual nature but some of it is not, for example: Give me my Romeo. And when I shall die Take him and cut him out in little stars, And he will make the faces of heaven so fine That all the world will be in love with night, This is extremely romantic. It also refers to death. When the nurse tells Juliet that Romeo has killed Tybalt, Juliet uses oxymorons, these show that she is confused, beautiful tyrant and fiend angelical. However, when the nurse starts to criticise Romeo, Juliet cuts off the nurse and defends him, Blisterd be thy tongue. Juliet implies that banishment is worse than death. She seems more mature and her practical side is seen especially when she says: My husband lives, that Tybalt would have slain; And Tybalts dead, that would have slain my husband: Romeo uses direct and romantic speech that shows his sincere and loving feelings; It was the lark, the herald of the morn, No nightingale. Look, love, what envious streaks Do lace the severing clouds in yonder east. Nights candles are burnt out, and jocund day Stands tiptoe on the misty mountain tops. I must be gone and live, or stay and die. This shows that he is mature; much more than Juliet earlier in the play. Their mature dreamy roles are swapped. Romeo reassures Juliet that they will be together again: I doubt it not; and all these woes shall serve For sweet discourses in our time to come. Juliets reply to this phrase is: O God! I have an ill-divining soul: Methinks I see thee, now art so low, As one dead in the bottom of a tomb: Either my eyesight fails, or thou lookst pale. This is dramatic irony because when Juliet wakes up from the potion she does see Romeo on the floor of the tomb. Juliet seeks the help of Friar Laurence because she has been abandoned by her parents and her nurse, the one person she is closest to, except for Romeo but it seems that he too has deserted her. She feels suicidal when she talks to Friar Laurence; she would rather die than marry the County Paris. When Friar Laurence suggests that she takes the potion she appears to be relieved. Though out the scene she is very courageous. The soliloquy dwells on her fear of the vault; it enlarges what she had already said to Friar Laurence. The speech confirms that the vault is connected with the catastrophic climax of the play. She is determined to kill her self in the potion does not put her in a slight coma: What if this mixture do not work at all? Shall I be married than tomorrow morning? No, no; this shall forbid it: lie thou there. She fears it could be poison and she then contradicts that statement in the next one. She feels that she may go mad in the tomb if Romeo is not there when she wakes, the horror of these images make her go mad. In the end she takes the potion for Romeos sake: Romeo, Romeo, Romeo! Heres drink I drink to thee! Romeos speech before taking the poison is direct and simple poetry. He is still referring to Juliet as light. In the speech Romeo personifies death and accuses death of trying to keep Juliet beautiful so that death can use her for his pleasure: That unsubstantial death is amorous, And that the lean abhorred monster keeps Thee here in the dark to be his paramour? He uses grotesque metaphors and similes. He appears to be preparing himself for death. A dateless bargain to engrossing death! He is trying to prolong the moment. His love for Juliet is obvious at this point in the play; he drinks the poison for Juliet, Heres to my love! all he wants is to be with Juliet and if they cant be together in life then the must be in death. As a result of the lovers deaths the families are brought together. Prince Escalus makes sure that the blame is shared; he makes that very clear: Where be these enemies? Capulet! Montague! See what a scourge is laid upon your hate, That heaven finds means to kill your joys with love; And I, for winking at your discords too, Have lost a brace of kinsmen. All are punished. The prince is also blaming himself; he knows that all had a part to play is Romeo and Juliets deaths, and this is why it is such a tragic ending which is written in a very expert way.

Teaching Philosophy :: Education Teaching Teachers Essays
Teaching Philosophy Since elementary school I have wanted to be a teacher. My mom is a teacher and my dad taught school for three years. I have been involved in school functions with them for as long as I can remember. I enjoyed going to various activities and helping to do whatever I was allowed. The only decision I had to make was whether I want to be: an elementary teacher or a secondary teacher. Since I love sports, I have decided to be a Physical Education and Health teacher. I would also like to be a coach since I have been in sports since middle school. The nature of each student is different. There are no two students the same and therefore, you have to teach each as an individual. Some students will catch on to a concept easily, while another student will have trouble. Some students are in school to get an education and do wellfor themselves, while others are in school because it's the law they have to attend until they are16 years old. The students that want to be in school will not cause as much trouble as the onesthat are there because they have to be there. Some students will always have their homework, while others won't do it at all. Some students need to know that someone cares about them enough to "push" them to do better. Many students today experience some type of family problem that they bring to school with them. The purpose of public education is to prepare students for the rest of their life. Education should help mold a child's life and show them opportunities for the future. Sports, tests, and papers are a few tools that help prepare students to become better people. Parents don't take time to teach their children things they should, so it's up to the school to do the job of both family and schools. As a teacher I will be a progressivism and social reconstructions type teacher. I will let the students have a say in what goes on in the classroom. My classroom will be an active classroom so all students can participate. Students that do not participate do not learn.

Respect Yourself Essay
Nowadays, many people grow up with the worries of the others. People worry about othersââ¬â¢ expectations, comments, or treatments. People always overthink about it until they are too busy to recognize themselves. People do many changes to be accepted, to be considered as a good person, and to be treated as good as possible. Sometimes they have to use a mask, become what the others want, ignore what they want to be or what they need. They do many sacrifices and self-restraints. People put everyone else before themselves because it is such an addiction to feel that they are needed. It makes them feel important and honored to contribute to someone elseââ¬â¢s life. People think that they are happy to be like that all the time because they donââ¬â¢t realize that actually it is merely a doctrine to them. What they feel is not happiness, but that is a personal feeling of security and self-confidence that is based on getting the approval of others. In fact, all people that have ever done all kinds of pleasing people have a lack of confidence. Newman said that is the main cause of why people always want everyone around them to be happy and they do whatever others ask them to do which is called as the phenomenon of being people-pleaser (as cited in Tartakovsky, 2011). In the beginning people-pleasers may feel happy to please others, however they need to realize that they can have serious risks such as stress, anxiety, or health problems because they overthink, worry and do many things to others without thinking about themselves. That is the imbalance. Thus, in my opinion, being people-pleasers without self-respect may cause the imbalance of life. Being people-pleaser actually is not entirely their fault. People consume many myths that direct them to be people-pleaser, such as ââ¬Å"giving is better than receivingâ⬠, ââ¬Å"humanââ¬â¢s task is to give to the othersâ⬠or ââ¬Å"people will be happy when people give to othersâ⬠. Those myths are not wrong, it is merely a misconception or a ââ¬Å"shieldâ⬠. Shield that is meant here is a self-protection when people realize that they are fake, tired, unhappy, or depressed to be people-pleaser. They use those myths to avoid the facts that they live in a wrong or unbalanced life. Those myths give doctrines to continue being people-pleaser because they are unconfident, scared, and worried of what othersââ¬â¢ expectations, comments, or treatments. Those thoughts direct them to do bad things to themselves, such as self-restraints and sacrifices. They are too busy to think about the others, worry about them, make them as comfortable as possible and all kinds of pleasing-people-things. People make themselves too busy to care about others, but forget and ignore themselves. They always make their necessities in the bottom of their priority or sometime they erase them. The questions are ââ¬Å"Have people loved themselves? Have people fulfilled their necessities? Have people given the nutritious foods, enough sleep or appropriate recreations to themselves?â⬠Maybe people seldom do that because they always try to ignore them and make the others as a number one in their life. Because of othersââ¬â¢ expectations, comments, or treatments, people also do many changes and strive to be someone they are not. They do those activities all the time until they deplete their energy resources, physically and mentally. The smaller energy that people have, the weaker they feel. They will feel like they are not able enough to keep moving forward. They will realize that they are not enough and ready to give. None of them wants to feel this feeling, so they insist to make themselves do harder than before, they ignore the limitation. People donââ¬â¢t realize that it will direct them to the imbalance and many serious risks, but they are so blind although the alerts are there. Spadaro (2011) posited that among the alerts of the imbalance in people-pleasersââ¬â¢ life are prolonged stress or anxiety, lack of focus, grumbling and physical or emotional symptoms. Prolonged stress or anxiety that they feel, however, especially when they feel it in their body, can be a signal that they are too busy and they donââ¬â¢t care about the inner needs and let their reserves shrink. This problem can cause the discomfort. People wonââ¬â¢t live in happy life, they will work under pressure, not a good pressure, but bad pressure that makes them sick. So when people feel anxious or stressful, they need to give some cares. The second alert is lack of focus. When people donââ¬â¢t fulfill their necessity, the thoughts and emotion will deceive them. They canââ¬â¢t sit calmly, they are too easy to divert the attention and postpone all works, and they will have the difficulty in concentrating. Because of that problem, they will find many inabilities. People need to make sure that they get refreshment and renewal if they want to get their focus back and sabotage themselves indirectly. The next alert is grumbling. Grumbling or complaining is a way to communicate to themselves about the unhappiness in their life. Grumbling means that actually people need help, support or break and they will feel many regrets. Therefore, if people realize that they are grumbling, they need to ask themselves why they grumble, what the causes of the unhappiness are. The last alert is physical and emotional symptoms. Body and emotion can react in many ways when people donââ¬â¢t give enough care to themselves. Spadaro (2011) explained that the reactions can be like strained shoulder, many sighs, headache, stomachache, lack of sleep, tears, outbursts of anger, overeating, lack of eating, etc. and then those small reactions can direct people to many disease complications such as inflammation of the liver, stomach disorder, etc. Those problems are not bad. They are trying to communicate with people. What people have to do is finding out what those problems mean. There are some balancing steps to solve the alerts and effects of the imbalance. According to Spadaro (2011) there are 7 balancing steps: 1. People have to be true to themselves, especially being true to their inner calling. It is important that they have faith in their own values and remember what is important to them. Because others think people should behave in a certain way doesnââ¬â¢t mean they are right. People need to follow their path. Even if others donââ¬â¢t respect their decision, it is important that they do. They also have to realize what they need, what they feel, and what makes them comfortable and happy. 2. People need to remove the thoughts about this or that. People are always in a situation that they have to choose between 2 choices and they usually let their necessity yield. From now, if they are in this situation again, they need to say to themselves that they have right and responsibility to give to themselves. 3. People need to do some preventive actions. They have to do some actions before they are trapped in the imbalance. For example, if they feel like they will have a headache, they need to have a break. 4. People have to communicate to their whole self. They have the necessity on four lifeââ¬â¢s levels which are physic, emotional, mental and spiritual. When they communicate to themselves, they have to assess those areas and ask ââ¬Å"what part that need some cares right nowâ⬠. People need to find it and make a commitment to make that part healthy. 5. People need to feel their victory. They have to celebrate all achievements that they make by respecting or being grateful, even it is too small to be celebrated. It can help them to recharge their inwardness. 6. People need to do simple steps to make the world that they want to be, such as buy themselves some cloths, stop being skimpy. They have to leave the shield, remove self-restrains, and feel the freedom. 7. People need to accept the compliments. They have to stop having low self-esteem; realize that they are worthy to receive something from the others. Pettinger (2008) added 3 balancing steps: 1. People need to learn handling criticism. Nobody likes criticism and when people are criticized, either directly or indirectly, they feel bad about themselves. They need to learn how to deal with criticism. They should not take criticism personally. They need to look at it from a detached perspective. Maybe it is false, in which case they should ignore it. If it is true, they can use it to develop their character. However, it is important not to take criticism too personally. 2. People need to remember the motivation, not the results. Sometimes they work with best of motives and the best of intentions only to be disappointed by the outcome. The problem is that they equate their self-respect to outer displays of wealth, success and social standing. It is the nature of life, that thing will not turn out as people hoped, but, it is a mistake to link their sense of self-worth to the achievement of external targets. People have to respect whatever they achieve, either it is good or bad. 3. People have to stop impressing the others. People will stress if they are permanently striving to impress others with outer displays. People who are impressed with material wealth and social standing are probably the kind of people not worth impressing anyway. People have to be comfortable with what they have, not what they think will impress others. Those balancing steps disembogue to self-respect that will direct people to the balance. Self-respect makes them more worthy, comfortable and happy to live their life. There will be no self-restraints, sacrifices or fakes. They will have many energy resources on their four lifeââ¬â¢s levels which are physic, emotional, mental and spiritual. With those energies, they are ready to give to the others and share many positive things. Being people-pleasers without self-respect may cause the imbalance of life then what they have to do is realizing the alerts and doing some steps to solve that imbalance. As the result, they will get the balance and feel that they are more worthy than before. Thus, people sometime have to think about themselves first before doing something for others.
